For the most part, I don’t really write about apps, which seem to be created at a rate of around a billion per second and which for the most part are fine little products in and of themselves, but that’s as far as it goes. So I was more interested to check out Martha Stewart CraftStudio for the shift it represents for the company at large than for the product itself. As Chief Integration and Creative Director, Gael Towey noted to me at the app’s launch, this signals a profound change in thinking at the company. Where once the control lay very much with Stewart and her teams of editors and designers, all laser-focused on creating perfectly beautiful (and finished) products, now that power is being ceded to the consumers. CraftStudio is a cute “maker” app that enables people to make their own cards and materials, all ready for printing. It has some lovely touches, including a quite wonderful “add glitter” function that made me stomp my feet with approval. But really, this is notable for the fact that a major company has noticed the shift in the economy and their customers, and is doing something about it.
